Eeek! High School!

I asked my parents for advice on high school  and they said that high school was a very hard time for both of them; they both wish they were able to do more.

This is my list of thing my parents taught me as I was growing up, just side comments that stuck:

Don't do drugs

Don't drink
Don't trust strangers
Don't take candy from strangers
Be Respectful
Try to be safe
You are responsible for what you do
And most importantly..
Don't touch the stove while It's on...

Now this is the more deep advice they gave me in summary:
Do as much as you can, without doing to much, because you only live once, YOLO! (really my dad said this) and that we should get to experience everything while it is still possible.

My mom said I should go to ALL the dances and have a good time with all my friends because after high school, you never know if you will see your friends anymore, we all go off to college, get degrees, and start our adult lives, Independently.

My Dad told me that when you reach high school people often think that they are there solely to get an education. He wants me to learn but he also wants high school to be filled with memories for me to glance back on and remember for the rest of my life.
I wish my parents told me more about their school years before now because, as I listen to them, I begin to hear how different school was for them and how privileged students are in school today. I want to go to high school and follow their advice to try as much as I can.
Thank you Mom and Dad!

My Perfect School

In my perfect school there would be
Alike most other teenagers I am not so fond of school. The Perfect school for me would be a school that had options. A school with no bullying and no stress, or a school people would not mind going to.
In my perfect school students would have to go to one of each: Social Studies, Math, Science, Health/PE, Language Arts, an Elective class, and a free period. Students would have to go to these classes but they would not have any certain order or schedule, they could go to whichever class they wanted to go to next. Remember this is just my idea of a perfect school. This way if a student needed more time for homework, they could go to the free class period instead of having a free class after the class they needed to do work for.

In my school there would be NO bullying, NO discrimination, and everyone could be respectful. I don't know if this would even be possible, but in my school, it would be. With not having to deal with bad behavior there would be less punishments.

I would also eliminate the grading rubric, people would get grades but the grade would reflect the amount of progress the students made from their previous assignment. There would be no punishment for late work or tardies, being a student I know how hard it is to finish homework if you have sports or other things you do after school. So that is why he teachers in my school would have assistants/student teachers that the students could talk to for individual, one-on-one study time. The teacher's assistants would be there to  work with the students that need a little extra help.

These are just some ideas for a perfect school, if you have any more Ideas or disagreements  please leave them in the comments.

INSPIRED 2013 BELIEVE

I remember in 6th grade people in my own class would hear my name and say, "Who is that?".  I was a quiet one. I had my friends but they were already popular in plays, music, or singing. People seemed to know them more and all I wanted was for everyone to recognize me and see that I actually existed. I had a terrible time speaking out in class, raising my hand, or just talking in general. I was shy, I could spend a whole class period and not say a single word. You could say I had trouble with self confidence. I was afraid of failure, or in this case, embarrassment. I was a very good student, I didn't show it on the outside because I hated drawing attention to myself. I still struggle with taking compliments andr standing in front of people. Well, because I was so shy I learned not to take part in  activities, if I ever wanted to do something I would stop, think about it, then tell myself that I couldn't do it or that I would just ruin everyone else's fun.

Around 7th grade I realized that I wanted to change. I wanted to be sociable, I wanted my self-confidence back. My friends encouraged me to join the play, Mulan. It was fun and a good start. Besides that, being in EXCEL and learning to work with other people, to lead, and to stand up and volunteer myself for projects was probably the best thing that happened to me. I felt better about myself. I met some really awesome people and they all helped me learn how to be included. I still had a bad time speaking out in class, and showing the side of me that my friends knew. But my friends still had to push me, but sometimes that wasn't enough. "I can't make up my mind.","I need time to think it through", "What if.." These were all things I would say. I was the one bringing myself down, I tried and tried to get myself to do things but it is easier to say no than to commit to something you aren't sure about. I wanted to commit. I wanted to be confident in myself. Confident enough that I could do the things that challenged me; The things that said, "Hey you can't do this" then go and prove myself wrong!

Now I have joined club teams, tried new sports, joined theater, taken classes, helped out in projects, and even led some projects too. All I wanted to do was to be able to push myself, so I wouldn't need other people to do it for me. I still struggle with speaking out in class but, I BELIEVE I can overcome the things that make me turn back and second guess myself.

OZ The Great and Powerful

MOVIE REVIEW
Oz The Great and Powerful
I personally didn't love this movie, just my personal view. It did NOT end the way I wanted it to. It was fun to watch and now I finality understand the real Wizard Of Oz movie but the whole story wasn't that detailed. I think the story moved way to fast, one second the main character would be flying in a storm in his hot air balloon then KISSING a girl he just met. Whoa PG-13 material!! Really the only terrible thing that happened was the whole movie...Just kidding. It was a nice story and I liked watching it. I am still a little mad at the ending because the story never really had a great resolution and left me with somewhat confused face.

Gelato Recipe

GELATO RECIPE

Gelato is an Italian dessert, somewhat like ice cream but it uses less sugar and is supposed to be healthier for you.

I absolutely love this recipe! We did a Oak testing, a long time ago in Literature  and one of the sample packets was about making Gelato!! Well after spending 3 days working on the packet I memorized the recipe and tried it out at home. It is really simple and I love to make it. I personally love making NUTELLA flavored gelato. I actually made some yesterday and I thought it would be a cool thing to post about.
Here is the link to the website.

Ingredients

Directions
  1. In a medium saucepan, mix milk and cream. Warm until foam forms around the edges. Remove from heat.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until frothy. Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Return mixture to saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the mixture gels slightly and coats the back of the spoon. If small egg lumps begin to show, remove from heat immediately.
  3. Pour the mixture through a sieve or fine strainer into a bowl. (this is where you would add your flavoring) Cover, and chill for several hours or overnight.
  4. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Transfer to a sealed container, and freeze until firm. If the gelato is too firm, place it in the refrigerator until it reaches the desired consistency. (I found it was easier just to put it in the  ice cream maker till I thought it looked good enough to eat)

WHAT YOU WANT

What do you want to be? Sometimes we get caught up in all the things we have to do, or what is " Popular" that sometimes it changes our views. I realized that some things weren't really making me happy. Do what you really want and you will find your way.

Depression

If I could cure any disease it would be Depression. I'm not sure if it is a disease or a disorder but it was what I wanted to talk about.

Depression is hard to fully explain, this is my explanation: it is caused when high amounts of stress or other prolonging emotions build up and become to hard to handle for most people so they resort to an easier way for their body to cope with emotions. Often not being able to be happy, laying around and letting your mind go where ever it wants instead of structured thinking; people with depression receive this dulling, sinking feeling in their chests, like they have weights on their shoulders and in their heart. This is what leads to other ways of dealing with these emotions, suicide.

How you are diagnosed:

This little part I kind of stole from another website..
Depression is a condition that is characterized by the presence of at least five of the following nine symptoms for at least two weeks in adults or one week in children or adolescents:
  • A depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning.
  • Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day.
  • Impaired concentration, indecisiveness.
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day.
  • Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day.
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death).
  • A sense of restlessness, or being slowed down.
  • Significant weight loss or gain

Depression can be caused by Death, Abuse, Major events, Illnesses, Personal problems, and even genetics. The top 5 things you can do to help prevent depression, and help yourself from becoming depressed

Manage stress and be sure to Get your rest.
Don’t take on too much and Allow yourself to feel your emotions.
Take care of your health and Exercise regularly.

Refrain from consuming alcohol or using tobacco or other narcotics.
Build your self-esteem by doing things you are good at.

Dessert Dance

DESSERT DANCE!!

This year the choices for the desert dance are Glow-in-the-Dark, Night in Hawaii, and Neverland. Personally I think these are really hard dance topics to do. There is always going to be a conflict. These are my answers to these questions. I would really like to see the Glow in the dark theme.

1. Why does this theme best suit our class?

I think the Glow-in-the -Dark theme would be really fun it allows you to dress up; but it does not call for anything in particular to wear. Anything white or neon will glow, with out having a full blown light shine in your face. I think the

2. What is your vision for decorations and photo booths?

My visions for decorations would be something like this: The room would be completely dark except for lights everywhere and black lights, that way there would be some light but not too much to ruin the dance. Plus the black light will light up anything glow in the dark, neon, or white. That way it would make it easier to dress up. The photo booths would be: Something to sit on and a black light glowing overhead to light up their clothes, and the backdrop would be black paper with glow in the dark splatters on it.

3. What will you contribute to make this night special for your class?

I can bring some lights including some black lights. I could also buy neon balloons or something. Possibly some glow sticks or paint.
